I set out from Imphal for Moreh - but I screeched to a halt as I saw this interesting sign on the road
It turned out to be a memorial to the Anglo Manipur war
A rather depressing statement of certain defeat...
A very modern design - difficult to understand
I must say that the architects had a very large and ambitious design
Actually the memorial was closed when I got there, but when this kind fellow saw that I had come all the way from Mumbai, he went and got it unlocked just for me! What a nice person!
I had a great time crossing the hillstowards Moreh...
...Until my rear brake suddenly stopped working! Shit! I called Delzad and he said that Royal Enfield brakes abruptly stop working when they heated up by being used a lot!
What nonsense...what stupid quality brakes are these.
What nonsense...what stupid quality brakes are these.
I waited for half an hour to let the brakes cool down and then rode slowly and cautiously to the Moreh border
Moreh will be the entry point to India in the ambitiously planned South East asian highway - so the government has built a fancy new ICP - Indian customs point.
But as of now the road still has a rather rickety 'Bridge over the rver Kwai' feel to it. The mega highway is still sometime away
I went to the other border which has an old world bazaar charm to it
Check out the perfunctionary immigration post
All borders should be as simple as this
I dropped into a Burmese joint for a drink
A lucky conversation with some people let know that I could in fact, ride into Burma without a visa - upto Tamu town! WOOHOO! I set out at once!
I am in a foreign country!!
What a beautiful golden temple! I went inside to check it out
There used to be a large Tamil population in Burma in the British era - they have gone now, but their temples still remain
I dropped into a charming Burmese hotel for a celebratory drink!
That was a wonderful and unexpected treat!
The next day i went off to a village called Andro, where they have a museum anda garden.
As I got out of Imphal and went up the hills, I had a great view of Imphal valley
As I got out of Imphal and went up the hills, I had a great view of Imphal valley
But when I reached Andro, I found that the museum was closed! Oh no. There was no one around so I went inside the complex to explore it.
The museum is a bunch of tribal huts with exhibits inside them. There are some carvings and stone pillars in the garden - which are open access
The huts are covered with beautiful carvings of animals and people and tribal motifs
There is a large and impressive garden in Andro - with a lake and all!
Then it was time to get back to Imphal to enjoy the last day of the Sangai festival
I was impressed with the quality of guests at the Sangai festival - first there was the princess of Thailand, and today was the American Ambassador and the American Consul general!
