The Ellora caves are simply incredible - a giant temple complex carved out of a single rock
The detailing is incredible - what godlike architects and carvers
Even after 2000 years you can see the confident groom and the shy bride...
The entire epic depicted in a single panel
Ajanta caves
These carved have been carved out of a beautiful horseshoe shaped valley with a beautiful waterfall. They were forgotten in the terrible wars raging in the Deccan in the middle ages, and were rediscovered by a British army officer on a hunting trip. The first thing he did was to carve his name on a wall - making him the first vandal as well as the rescuer of the caves
The scale of the place has to be seen to be appreciated
They are famous for having some of the best quality Buddhist era wall paintings of ancient times - but obviously we couldnt take photos of them, and had to content ourselves with photos of the sculptures outside
